Planning, Power, Precision

From a complex transport with only inches to spare to an in-plant lift, the placement of a 1,053-kip tower emerged as one of Deep South’s most challenging recent projects. Given the tower’s dimensions (measuring 198’ L x 28’ W x 22’-9” H), Deep South’s team worked closely with the refinery’s operational team to choose the best route and overcome any obstacles. Several equipment methods were used due to the size of the tower and on-site logistics.

Once an approved plan was in place, Deep South received the tower from the ship onto a barge and transported it to the dock where it was rolled off using bolstered Scheuerle SPMTs. The tower continued on the route to the first pipe rack, where it was transloaded using 800-ton gantries to Scheuerle “Split” SPMTs. The split SPMTs moved the tower under two racks and over a railroad using a Deep South in-house designed bridge system. Once over the railroad, the tower was lifted back onto the bolstered SPMTs to meet the width restrictions along the rest of the route. Once positioned at the site, a 1,375-ton Terex-Demag CC-6800 and a 440-ton Terex-Demag CC-2400-1 tailed and set the tower.
