Complex Refinery Turnaround Delivered with Precision
A five-week equipment turnaround at a refinery in the Southeast required multiple equipment transports, removals, and replacements across a large work area. With a close eye on safety and efficiency, Deep South engineered and executed a comprehensive plan that incorporated a suite of 16 cranes ranging from a 500-ton hydraulic all-terrain crane to a 35-ton rough-terrain crane. The project included the replacement of 30,000-pound fin-fans, transport and setting of three 40’x20’x10’ box coolers, a reactor catalyst change on multiple reactors, the replacement of a 58,000-pound exchanger bundle with an aerial extractor, and the removal, replacement, and on-site hauling of 68,000-pound tube bundles.
The transport and setting of the box coolers tested the team’s precision-move capabilities. For the three box coolers, the team relied on a 10-axle-line Scheuerle SPMT to move the pieces into place with just 3” of clearance on each side.
