Deep South Places Its Trust in Goldhofer

US heavy lift and transport specialist invests in dual-lane axle lines and self-propelled transporters from Memmingen, Germany.
Memmingen, Germany, August 5, 2014 – Deep South Crane & Rigging (Deep South) is on the fast track with Goldhofer: Within just a few months, Deep South Crane & Rigging, the US heavy lift and transport specialist headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has twice invested in new high-end transport equipment from Goldhofer Aktiengesellschaft. Following eight axle lines of the THP/DL (dual lane) heavy-duty module system, Deep South has ordered the first PST/SL-E self-propelled transporters with hydrostatic drive from Goldhofer. The vehicle combination, with 52 axle lines and four Power Packs with an output of 360 KW each, can move loads of up to 2,100 tons.
"With the new Goldhofer axle lines, we can handle our transport assignments with more flexibility than ever,” says Mitch Landry, President of Deep South. He also sees two specific advantages of the Goldhofer solution: "Compared with the heavy-duty module system we have been using to date, the powered PST/SL-E axles with a basic width of 3,000 mm offer significantly improved lateral stability, and we also benefit from the lower loading height in comparison with conventional SPMTs."
All together, Deep South now has twenty dual-lane axle lines from Goldhofer, which are designed primarily for moving heavy loads on public roads. The Goldhofer THP/DL modules enable Deep South to work with axle loads of up to 53,000 lbs based on the basic widths of 16, 18 or 20 ft. With the dual-lane system, Deep South can vary vehicle width to comply with the different transport regulations in place in the various federal states. "That makes this module system extremely flexible, all the more so as the low deadweight and wide range of accessories such as gooseneck, drop decks and turntable make it possible to find the perfect solution for every load on an individual basis,” says Horst Häfele, Sales Director Heavy Duty Modules at Goldhofer.
With their new PST/SL-E self-propelled systems with multiway steering and hydrostatic drive, the heavy transport teams at Deep South are always on the safe side for all operations in confined spaces requiring maximum lateral stability and minimum loading height. Thanks to the electronic multiway steering with a steering angle of ± 135 degrees, even the heaviest loads can be turned on the spot through 360 degrees and positioned with millimeter precision without additional maneuvering. With hydraulic axle suspension with a stroke of ± 300 mm, Goldhofer’s PST/SL-E axles are ideal for construction site working. At the same time, the PST/SL-E modules can also be used on public roads, if required.
"We are naturally delighted that Deep South has chosen our modules for their latest investments. Their highly positive experience with the dual-lane system supplied in 2007 and the excellent backing they have received from our technical support were doubtless among the main reasons why we as the market leader landed two consecutive contracts, says Häfele. He added: "As Goldhofer has a market share of approx. 90 percent for heavy-duty modules with electronic steering system in North America, it is easy for our customers to rent additional axle lines should the need arise and also rent out own modules to other Goldhofer customers.”

Assembling the 1,500T VersaCrane™ TC-24000 off site and moving it via SPMT saved this client 15 days of downtime and allowed the refinery unit to run at full capacity until unit shutdown. During the scheduled outage, Deep South was tasked to replace two coke drums, each weighed 452,800 lbs and were 19’-2” outside diameter and 96’-0” long and were comparable in size and weight to the old drums.
